Robert Wayne “Tootie” Banks
January 19, 1952 – February 16, 2026
Robert Wayne Banks, lovingly known as “Tootie,” passed away on February 16, 2026, at the age of 74. Born on January 19, 1952, in Charlotte, North Carolina to Robert B. Banks and Betty J. Shumaker.
Robert was a proud Charlotte native and a 1970 graduate of Garinger High School.
Tootie built a strong and hardworking career over the years. He started by owning a business, Puff and Stuff Furniture Store then he worked as a sign installer on large and tall buildings, a job that reflected both his courage and skill. Later on, he began working as a pipe fitter and served many years as a diesel fuel underground tank installer and supervisor. He was known for his work ethic, leadership, and willingness to get the job done right.
Outside of work, Tootie had a gift for fixing just about anything and was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. He had a deep love for his dogs and found joy in his extensive music collection, especially his LP records. He also enjoyed his 8-tracks and CDs, appreciating music across generations. One of his favorite sayings was, “Don’t cross the bridge before you get there,” a reflection of his steady and practical outlook on life.
He is survived by his son, Chris Banks (Ali Umstead); his sister, Martha Banks Pridgen; his brother, Randy Banks (Lisa Banks); and his sister-in-law, Donna Banks along with many loved nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Monica Banks; his brother, Michael Banks; his sister, Vicky Helms; and his nephew Jason Banks.
Family and friends are invited to gather on Saturday, February 21, 2026, at Mountain Island Church of Christ. The family will receive friends at 1:00 p.m., with the service to follow at 2:00 p.m.
Robert will be remembered for his hardworking spirit, his willingness to help others, his love of music, and the steady wisdom he shared with those around him. His presence will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
